Extra Life 2018

The short version:

I’ll be playing games for 25 hours (again! for the fourth year!) on November 3rd to benefit Children’s Hospital here in Pittsburgh. You can support my efforts by GOING HERE TO CONTRIBUTE A PLEDGE. You should also be able to watch my live feed of the gaming day on my youtube channel: https://www.youtube.com/user/rickreynolds1969.

The longer version:

Every year the Extra Life organization has a gaming day where people pledge to play games of any kind (video games, board games, card games, whatever) for a 24 hour period. People can pledge money to support these gaming efforts and the monies collected go to help a local Children’s Hospital. This year (like some previous years) they’ve chosen the date to land on the same weekend as the time change, so it ends up being 25 hours of gaming.

It’s kinda like a walk-a-thon or other such fund-raiser – you pledge money towards a good cause in a way that also supports the efforts of a friend.

Based on previous years, I’ve set a goal of $500. That should really be attainable. I’m not an overly competitive guy, so I’m not on a crazy campaign to out-do previous years’ amounts (although that would be great), I’m just wanting to do something fun that benefits kids. I’d love it if you would sponsor me by GOING HERE TO CONTRIBUTE A PLEDGE.

In previous years I’ve only played on systems that were pre-crash (i.e. pre-1984 or so). So everything would pre-date the NES. Like always, I’ll be concentrating on those systems again, but I’ll also be branching out a bit. During this past fall, I renovated my basement and have a nice, new custom-made shelving unit displaying a “wall of consoles.” I’m hoping that will make things simpler in terms of choosing the next system to play.

I’m also considering playing some arcade games with a camera over my shoulder to stream the audio/video — my current arcade setup doesn’t feature any kind of dual screen setup to allow me to send the video to another device. If this pans out, I could also attempt some hand-held gaming over the feed. It would be fun to pull out my Microvision, for instance.

At any rate here’s a list of stuff you can expect to see if you pull up my live feed:

  • Intellivision
  • Atari 2600
  • Odyssey 2
  • Colecovision
  • Atari 5200
  • Atari 7800
  • Bally Astrocade
  • Vectrex
  • Fairchild Channel F
  • Emerson Arcadia
  • Pong (assuming I can get an opponent)
  • RCA Studio II
  • Unisonic Olympian 2600
  • Nintendo Entertainment System
  • Sega Genesis
  • Super Nintendo Entertainment System
  • Atari Video Pinball (New this year!)
  • Sega Master System (New this year!)
  • Sega SG-1000 (via the SMS) (New this year!)
  • APF MP1000 (New this year!)
  • Sears Motocross (New this year!)
  • Sony Playstation 2 (New this year!)
  • Coleco Telstar Arcade (New this year!)

I’m still doing some testing and tweaking of my setup for streaming the games onto youtube. But you should be able to see the gameplay by going to my youtube channel on the game day November 3rd: https://www.youtube.com/user/rickreynolds1969.

Thanks so much!
Rick
